One of the reasons for strong anti-Americanism in Russia can be linked to the hostile policy of America in the past. A refreshing approach of less hostility and more cooperativeness is a welcome change and may in fact calm down the relations between these two countries. Russia is a world power, and with the oil, gas, timber and diamonds, coming to an agreement not to disagree would be nice. Unfortunately, anit-Americanism serves a purpose.





Russia risks destabilization on its borders if the war in Afghanistan further deteriorates. And on Friday, a senior official said the Kremlin would allow the U.S. to ship weapons headed for Afghanistan across Russian territory.





But analysts said Moscow still feels a compulsion to interfere with U.S. goals. Anti-Americanism, some say, has deep roots in Russia's view of itself, its insecurities and aspirations to become a superpower once more.





In Russia, cozy ties with the West are associated with the impotence, humiliation and corruption of the 1990s. Hostility, on the other hand, is considered a hallmark of strength, smacking of Soviet empire and Putin's oil-rich ride in the presidency.
You have #4 completely wrong, Putin is much more a warmonger. cold, calculating, but well sane. Iraq couldnt even come close.





Putin has made comments that Georgia and Ukraine will be part of Russia again, but by his doing alone. He is already made the call for war against Georgia to finish the job they started. And war is immennant.





Remember both countries are almost NATO because of their democracy is crutial to the US. But Obama has yet to address it except possibly now when he restores so called relations.





Russia is chalked also full of natural resources the U.S couldnt dream of, besides crude, gas, gold,ect they are the only country in the world with Platonium deposits. They are no means a dead zone.





It will be interesting on what Obama achieves on the diplomatic talks with Putin and his puppet president. My guess they are going to crumple further, making the Red Bear much more of a threat than anyone in the world.
They have problems, but not handling Putin now could lead to bigger problems in the future. He's already aggressively entered other regions. Better to deal with him and create a relationship before it goes south.
Keep your friends close, and your enemies closer. If the NK thing blows up, having Russia on our side to use as a launching site for missions would be a really good thing.





Plus, why have enemies, that you can turn into friends?
We need Russian cooperation to ship our crap into Afghanistan in order to avoid Pakistan as much as possible.
Ummmmmm. Maybe because Russia can still blow us off of the map.
